Appaz Kurtamet was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment in a strict regime colony, with the first year to be served in prison.

Appaz Kurtamet was detained by Russian occupants on 23 July 2022 at the administrative border with temporarily occupied Crimea, where he was on his way to visit relatives. Until 8 October last year, information about Appaz's whereabouts was not known. The occupiers started the trial in February this year.

Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets said on Telegram:

the 21-year-old has been accused by the occupiers of "financing" the Crimean volunteer battalion. ("the creation of an armed formation, leadership of such a formation or their financing" part 1 of Article 208 of the Russian Criminal Code). According to the investigation, he transferred 500 hryvnias to the battalion representative. In fact, Appaz had lent this money to an acquaintance who had by then joined the volunteer battalion.

Lubinets called on the international community to increase political and diplomatic pressure on Russia.

Until the complete and unconditional release of all illegally detained Ukrainian citizens," the ombudsman stressed.
