NATO will coordinate aid to Ukraine instead of the US

NATO is strengthening its role in supporting Ukraine by taking over the coordination of military assistance from the United States.

This was reported by Reuters, citing sources in diplomatic circles.

Coordination without involving the alliance's troops

According to the publication, the North Atlantic Alliance will expand its participation in the confrontation between Russia and Ukraine, but without the direct use of its own military forces. At the same time, the key role of the US in providing assistance remains, although its scope may change under the Donald Trump administration.

Diplomats, however, acknowledge that the handover to NATO may have a limited effect given that the U.S. under Trump could still deal a major setback to Ukraine by slashing its support, as it is the alliance's dominant power and provides the majority of arms to Kyiv, the report said.

The new support structure for Ukraine is already in place

According to Reuters sources, the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) mission is already operational. Its headquarters is located at a US military base near Wiesbaden, Germany.

Trump's position and Ukraine's responses

on 6 December, Donald Trump said that military aid to Ukraine could be reduced if he returns to power.

Trump will strive to achieve peace in Ukraine, and his attitude towards military aid may change," the former interior minister said.

In addition, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on 13 December announced the allocation of an additional $500 million for Ukraine's defence needs.

Meeting between Zelensky and NATO Secretary General

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte is scheduled to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels on 18 December. The main topic of discussion will be further support for Ukraine, including the strengthening of air defence systems.
