The Times: Trump can negotiate with Russia without Europe's consent - worst outcome for NATO


European capitals are preparing for a complex geopolitical game, where familiar security guarantees may be threatened and the role of the US as Europe's protector is in doubt.
Concerns are growing in Europe, with senior officials warning that the US could leave its NATO allies alone with Russia and even strike its own deal with Moscow. The Times writes about it.
It is pointed out that European countries are already preparing for the "worst-case scenario" - the possibility that Washington will refuse to defend NATO countries in case of Russian aggression. And one of the officials talking to journalists noted: the Americans' withdrawal from European security is not the worst case scenario, but a real nightmare - if the US turns against Europe and signs a major deal with Russia, which recently seemed impossible.
A British military source confirmed that worries have intensified amid the possible redirection of US resources from Ukraine to the Middle East.
At the same time, Donald Trump has criticised allies for insufficient US assistance in the war with Iran and has repeatedly hinted that America may "not be on the ground" if European allies are attacked.
