All 18-year-old Ukrainians will receive 900 hryvnias each for books

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on 18 June signed the law No 11251, which introduces certificates for the purchase of books. This was reported by the director of the Ukrainian Institute of the Book (UIK), Oleksandra Koval.

She explained that then 370 million hryvnias, which are allocated in the budget for this programme, "have a chance to replenish the accounts of Ukrainian publishers from the cards of the lucky 18-year-olds, who will receive books in the Ukrainian language of their own choice". Those, in turn, will publish an additional 1.5-2 million books.

People's deputy, one of the initiators of this law Eugenia Kravchuk noted that already this year 18-year-old Ukrainians will receive a certificate in "Diy" in the amount of 908 UAH to buy books.

So already this year, Ukrainians who are 18 years old from 1 January 2024 will receive a certificate in "Dii" for the amount of 908 UAH for electronic/paper/audio/for persons with visual impairment books, - she wrote.

The law provides a clear procedure for granting subsidies for books: a list of documents, specified terms of consideration of applications (10 days) and publicising the results (5 days).

Assistance will be provided:

• within a year from the day a citizen of Ukraine reaches the age of 18;
• at the birth of a child - to one of the parents or other legal representatives of the child within one year from the date of the child's birth.

The law also provides subsidies for reimbursement of rent for the premises of bookshops.
