The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has prevented new attempts by the Russian Federation to obtain up-to-date data on the Ukrainian Defence Forces in Donetsk Region.

TheSBU has detained a Wagner spy who was monitoring military airfields in Donetsk Region. This was reported by the SBU on 2 May.

While carrying out counter-sabotage measures, the SBU detained an enemy spy who was tracking the AFU positions in the Kramatorsk district.

He received this assignment from the PMC "Wagner", which is now part of the regular forces of the Russian Federation.

The spy had to identify and transmit to the enemy the exact coordinates of the airfields where AFU attack helicopters are based. He also found out the locations of the AFU troops and heavy weapons.

The Russian spy turned out to be a local resident, an ideological supporter of the Russian Federation. In the autumn of 2023, he agreed to work for the occupiers, who remotely came to him through his Russian acquaintance.

To gather intelligence, the spy travelled around the area on foot and covertly filmed the territory.

During the search, a mobile phone with evidence of intelligence and subversive activities in favour of the Russian Federation was seized from him.

Investigators of the SBU informed the detainee of suspicion under part 2 of article 114-2 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (unauthorised dissemination of information about the direction, movement of weapons, arms and ammunition in Ukraine, movement, movement or deployment of the AFU).

He is now in custody. He faces up to 8 years in prison.
