Ukraine to set up new camp for prisoners of war

This was reported by the Ukrainian parliamentary commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets.

A new camp for prisoners of war will be opened in the near future. Work is also under way to open another camp.

Lubinets explained that the need for a new POW camp is due to the large number of captured Russians. While the number of POWs is due to the situation at the front, the decreasing motivation of the Russian military, and the fact that the Russian Federation is blocking POW exchanges.

Following the good example of Camp Zapad-1, the conditions in the new camp will meet all the requirements of international humanitarian law. The Russian military will be provided with medical care, three meals a day, communication with their families, and constant access to representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross. The camp itself is located deep behind the lines, as it is stipulated by the Geneva Conventions," the ombudsman said.

He stressed that Ukraine complies with international humanitarian norms and keeps prisoners of war in specially designated places in accordance with the Geneva Conventions. While the Russian Federation can keep Ukrainian servicemen in ordinary prisons and penal colonies together with prisoners, sometimes in horrible conditions.
