Russians opened fire on a car with volunteers, a foreigner was killed


The deceased was 58 years old. He was a Canadian citizen of Slovak origin.
In Donetsk Region, near the frontline town of Chasov Yar, foreign volunteers of the Road2Relief organisation (Help Road) came under fire from Russian artillery. One of them was killed, two more were wounded, one person is missing.
As reported on the organisation's Instagram page, the emergency occurred on the morning of Saturday, September 9.
Four volunteers travelled by minibus from Slavyansk to the village of Ivanovskoye, which is in the direction of Bakhmut, to assess the needs of civilians. In the area of Chasovy Yar, their vehicle came under fire. Due to a direct hit, the vehicle overturned and caught fire," the organisation informed.
In the car were:
- german medical volunteer Ruben Mavik;
- swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Tyr;
- canadian volunteer Anthony "Tonko" Ignat;
- spanish volunteer and director of Road2Relief Emma Igual.
Canadian volunteer Anthony Ignat was confirmed dead. Ruben Mavic and Matias Tyr suffered severe shrapnel wounds and burns, but are now in stable condition in hospitals.
Emma Igual is reported missing.
The deceased is known to be 58 years old. He was a Canadian citizen of Slovak descent. He lived in the province of Ontario and worked there as a labourer. In 2022, the man sold his truck and came to Ukraine to help people here during a full-scale war.
Road to Relief is a Ukrainian humanitarian NGO that was established in March 2022 to provide aid and support to civilians in Ukraine affected by the Russian invasion. Its volunteers work in Donetsk and Kherson regions.
