On Friday, Vladimir Putin formally announced the annexation of the occupied territories of Ukraine.
Putin seized the Ukrainian lands, held fake referendums there and announced them as the territory of the Russian Federation. And to consolidate his imaginary victories, he held a concert on the main square of Moscow. At the same time, his speech was full of insults, lies and narcissism. However, Putin's plan was also voiced in it. Alexander Baunov, a research fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, writes about this in an article for the New York Times .
Baunov drew attention to the fact that Putin had already appointed those responsible for the explosions on the Nord Streams - the United States, which means that he disclaimed responsibility for the inability to supply gas through this route.
He also hinted that Russia might try to respond in a similar way, namely by sabotaging Western pipelines. The transformation of energy carriers into weapons can reach a new level, at which not only the flow of fuel from Russia will be reduced, but also supplies from other countries will be actively disrupted, the analyst writes.
Putin also said that negotiations should immediately begin to end the war. At the same time, he called on Ukraine to immediately stop hostilities, withdraw troops from new Russian territories and sit down at the negotiating table.
He issued the same ultimatum before the Russian invasion of Ukraine. After that, Russia launched an invasion,” Baunov pointed out.
He also ruled out the possibility of such and stressed that Ukrainians would not agree to this, especially after fake referendums.
And this leads to Putin's third point, that the US set the precedent for the use of nuclear weapons by dropping bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. It is not difficult to understand this hint. If the West continues to send weapons to Ukraine and refuses to press Kyiv to agree to a solution that satisfies Russia, Putin may resort to the use of nuclear weapons, the expert believes.
According to Baunov, Putin sees this as a kind of approximation to the United States - an "equation" of forces and an opportunity to win at any cost.
