- Ukraine's only sturgeon hatchery completely flooded

The destruction of the Kakhovka reservoir led to the complete flooding of Ukraine's only sturgeon hatchery.
More than 1.5 million sturgeons were raised at the plant every year, and now they are under threat of being destroyed. This is reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
This is a direct threat to further reproduction of sturgeon populations, which may lead to the extinction of these relict species in our state's water bodies. Each year, the plant provided over 1.5 million juvenile sturgeon spawning stock. At present, the extent of the destruction and the extent of the damage are being established," it was reported.
It is noted that the destruction of the plant and reduction of the fish population, which has a special protective status, will have an extremely negative impact on the environmental situation in Ukraine and the countries of the Black Sea basin.

The sturgeon hatchery "Dneprovskiy Production and Experimental Fish Farm named after academician S.T. Artischuk" is located in the village of Dneprovske, Belozersk district, Kherson oblast. It began its work in 1984 and maintained reproduction of Ukrainian sturgeon species, which lost their natural reproductive capacity.
As a result of the destruction of the Kakhovskaya HPP, the damage to the fishing industry from the death of adults alone could reach 95 thousand tons or about 4 billion hryvnias. In total, according to preliminary calculations, the loss of all bioresources will amount to 10.5 billion UAH, - remind the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.
It should be added that after the destruction of Kakhovska hydroelectric power station mass extinction of fish began in Dnipropetrovsk and Mykolayiv regions. As it threatens people's health, a temporary ban on fishing and sales of fish has been imposed on the territory of Snihyryivska and Gorokhivska communities in Mykolayiv Region.
