The newspaper La Stampa published information that the adviser to the leader of the League party, Antonio Capuano, met on May 27 and 28 with an employee of the Russian Embassy in Italy, Oleg Kostyukov.

La Stampa journalists claim that Antonio Capuano discussed with the Russian ambassador to Italy the possibility of the collapse of the government coalition. This information is published by the publication referring to the data of special services. The negotiations took place when the League party opposed the provision of military assistance to Ukraine.
The leader of the League party, Matteo Salvini, commented on Thursday, where he confirmed that negotiations between his adviser and the Russian embassy had taken place.
International politics is independent of governments; we are proud allies of the free democracies of the West. This does not mean unwillingness to have good relations with Putin… Of course, unlike other warlike countries in Europe, I prefer Italy, leading the dialogue and mediation,” Salvini said on Radio 24.
Political forces in Italy do not have a consensus on this issue but require an explanation of what the negotiations were about.
