Rodents do not allow servicemen to sleep normally, climbing into sleeping bags and under mattresses, biting, eating food.

British intelligence has pointed to another problem on the frontline. It is about rodents. It is noted that over the past weeks both Ukrainian and Russian troops have been suffering from an extraordinary number of rats and mice in some parts of the front. This is stated in an intelligence report of the British Ministry of Defence, published on Saturday, 23 December.

British analysts explained, as the weather has become colder, the mice are looking for warm places where they can survive the frost. In particular, they are climbing into vehicles and defence installations.

The rodents will add extra pressure to the morale of fighters on the front lines," it said.

Analysts attribute the large number of rodents to the warm and mild autumn in Ukraine, when fields remained snow-free for a long time and mice could easily find food for themselves there.

The mild autumn together with sufficient food from fields left uncultivated by the fighting probably contributed to the increase in the rodent population," the experts concluded.

Intelligence officials point out that the problems posed by mice and rats may be more significant than they realise.

Rodents pose a danger to military equipment by chewing through cables - as was recorded in the same area during World War II," the intelligence emphasised.

It is also indicated that the number of cases of diseases spread by rodents has increased among the Russian military.

Note that rodents can carry typhoid fever, acute gastroenteritis, foot and mouth disease, leptospirosis, haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, rabies, helminthic diseases (trichinellosis, ascariasis), cholera, dysentery, tuberculosis, pseudotuberculosis, botulism, brucellosis and others.
