Latvian President Egils Levits became the first European leader who, after the start of the war in Ukraine, did not leave, but stayed overnight in Kyiv. This was told by "European Truth". It is known that there is an informal security rule for foreigners that prohibits them from staying in Kyiv overnight.

It is known that the politician arrived in Kyiv yesterday, he completes a two-day visit to the Ukrainian capital.

The publication notes that Levits' visit comes against the backdrop of changes at the front, where the Armed Forces of Ukraine are carrying out an effective counteroffensive in the East and South, and the frequency of Russian missile attacks has significantly decreased, along with an increase in the effectiveness of their interception in areas remote from the front line.

There is no official information about the scheduled meetings of the President of Latvia today. It will be made public after the completion of his visit.

The day before, after a meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky, Egils Levits said that it was time to start negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.

Ukraine not only politically and culturally belongs to the European family, but should also be a member of the EU, because the European Union is an association of free democratic countries,” he said, the press service of the President of Ukraine reports.

At the same time, Egils Levits emphasized that Latvia and Poland will always remain on the side of the Ukrainian people, who are now fighting not only for their freedom, but also for all of Europe and the entire free world. He also promised that Latvia would help Ukraine recover.

He has also already visited the Alley of Courage in Kyiv.

Egils Levits has already visited Kyiv in April. He became one of the first Western leaders to come to the capital of Ukraine.
