The European Medicines Regulatory Agency has issued a recommendation authorizing two vaccines against the omicron strain of coronavirus.

These are adapted versions of the original Comirnaty (Pfizer/BioNTech) and Spikevax (Moderna) vaccines to target an omicron variant in addition to the original SARS-CoV-2 strain. This is stated on the website of the agency.

Vaccination is proposed to be allowed for people over 12 years of age and who have received at least the primary vaccination against COVID-19.

Vaccines have been adapted (i.e. updated) to better match circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants. Adapted vaccines can expand protection against different variants, so they are expected to help maintain optimal protection against COVID-19 as the virus evolves.

The side effects that have been observed with these vaccines are similar to those observed with the original vaccines, and were mostly mild and short-lived, according to the website of the European agency.

The agency's findings will be sent to the European Commission, which will make the final decision.

At the same time, the original vaccines, Comirnaty and Spikevax, continue to be effective in preventing severe illness, hospitalizations and deaths associated with COVID-19 and will be used in vaccination campaigns in the EU, in particular for primary vaccination. .
