- UN names number of civilians killed and injured in Ukraine in January

Russian Federation attacks affecting areas far from the front line have also led to an increase in the number of children killed and injured.
The UN human rights monitoring mission to Ukraine in January confirmed 641 cases of civilians killed or injured as a result of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine. This is stated in the report of the UN mission.
According to the UN, confirmed civilian casualties in January were 37 per cent higher than in November 2023. There was an increase in deaths and casualties far from the front line.
The January increase in civilian casualties was mainly due to increased attacks by Russian armed forces across the country using missiles and barrage munitions. These attacks, which affected areas far from the front line, also led to an increase in the number of children killed and wounded," the report said.
Civilian casualties also rose in Russian-occupied territory.
The report noted that the number of child casualties more than doubled over the same period, with 40 children killed or injured in January compared to 18 casualties in November.
