UN confirms more than 15,000 civilian deaths in Ukraine since February 2022

The UN has announced new data on the victims of the war in Ukraine.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, at least 15,172 civilians have been confirmed dead and another 41,378 people have been injured. This was reported by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, which released the data as of 31 January 2026. The organisation stressed that the real figures could be much higher.
At least 766 children were among the victims, and another 2,540 minors were injured.
According to the UN, in 2025 alone, at least 2,526 civilians will die and 12,162 will be injured. This is a 31 per cent increase from 2024 and a 70 per cent increase from 2023.
The increase in the use of long-range weapons - missiles and barrage munitions - is particularly alarming. They accounted for 35 per cent of all civilian casualties in 2025 (686 dead and 4,451 injured), up 66 per cent from the previous year. Casualties due to short-range drone attacks in frontline areas increased by 121%.
Nearly two-thirds of all casualties in 2025 - 9,272 people - came from frontline areas.
The UN also notes systematic attacks on the country's energy infrastructure. As of January 2026, Ukraine has lost more than half of its pre-war generating capacity. About 11 GW of electricity is now available, with a necessary winter peak of 18 GW.
