Ukraine cannot become part of EU until war is over - European Commission member
Meanwhile, European officials insist that Ukraine must be helped in its fight against Russia.
European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans said this in an interview with DW.
No, it is not possible. But the whole idea is that Ukraine should emerge from this conflict victorious, sovereign, independent, free and able to make this choice itself. And I think that Ukraine is fighting for this to happen. The European Union should support Ukraine in achieving this goal.
The EU Commission also has seven conditions, which Kiev has to fulfill on its way to membership in the European Union: judicial reforms, fighting corruption, de-oligarchization and policy towards national minorities.
At the same time Timmermans considers Ukraine's accession to the EU to be the largest single EU enlargement in 2004.
It is worth recalling that the European Council granted Ukraine candidate status for EU membership on 23 June 2022. At the same time, the European Commission provided recommendations on the implementation of reforms which Ukraine should implement.
