Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska defeated Russian Victoria Azarenka at the Australian Open and reached the quarter-finals. The match ended with the score 7:6, 6:4. The video was published by AustralianOpen in social network X.
In the 1/8 finals, the 23-year-old Odessa native defeated former world number one and two-time Australian Open champion (2012, 2013) Victoria Azarenka, who due to Russia's full-scale war against Ukraine is allowed to compete in a neutral status.
Yastremskaya repeated a unique record. Dayana became the first tennis player from the qualification since 1999, who managed to beat two winners of Grand Slam tournaments at one major.
Immediately two Ukrainians for the first time in history passed in the 1/4 finals of the Grand Slam. The first was Marta Kostyuk, who also defeated the Russian, but with a crushing score. Elina Svitolina withdrew from the competition due to back pain.
At the end of the meeting Dayana Yastremskaya made an inscription on the TV camera: "Family is my Ukraine".
