American scientists have found that team sports are very useful for the mental development of children.

Team sports like football or hockey reduce the risk of developing anxiety disorders and depression in children, but solo sports, on the contrary, increase this risk. These conclusions were made by scientists from the University of California, USA, writes Study Finds.

The study involved 11,000 children and adolescents aged 9 to 13 years. It turned out that those who played football or basketball were 20% less likely to suffer from depression compared to those who did not play sports.

In contrast, children who practiced solitary sports like gymnastics, wrestling, or tennis were 15% more likely to experience anxiety disorders than those who did not exercise.

When children are constantly in contact with their peers, this strengthens their social communication skills and maintains a sense of healthy competition, but individual sports increase stress levels, since the result here depends only on one person, the experts explained.
