Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the number of orphans and children deprived of parental care has increased in Ukraine.

As of 1 March 2023, 4,304 children had acquired the relevant status. At the same time, before the full-scale invasion, there were 17,000 orphans and children deprived of parental care in Ukraine.

This was reported by the National Social Service of Ukraine.

It is noted that since 24 February 7,072 children have been evacuated.

In this regard, Ukraine is launching the project "Caring families for 1000 children", created by the NGO "Ukrainian Network for Child Rights" with the support of UNICEF.

The project provides for the training of child welfare workers and the involvement of community heads in the process of creating family forms of upbringing. Specialists will also study the possibility of biological families to reunite with children who, under different circumstances, have been placed in institutions and, if necessary, help such families.

In the project we will do our best to make the path of a child and a family towards each other as easy and quick as possible. We will help to overcome difficulties taking into account the current legislation, - said the project coordinator Irina Vasilyeva.

The project covers the whole territory of Ukraine. And soon a hotline will be launched for people who want to become guardians, adopt a child and face obstacles.

Earlier Socialportal reported that the Ministry of Social Policy conducted a study on foreign experience of raising orphans in foster families. Based on the results, experts have drawn up a number of recommendations to improve Ukrainian legislation.
