The EU is preparing a new sanctions package against Russia.
Russia, as an aggressor country, is not going to end the war against Ukraine in the foreseeable future. This was stated by the European Union's head of diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, on Platform X.
President Trump's determination to reach a peace settlement is key. The EU, together with our European partners, coordinated with President Trump ahead of the meeting in Alaska. However, the reality is that Moscow has no intention of winding down this war anytime soon," Kallas noted.
She emphasised that even during the Alaska summit, Russia resumed its attacks on Ukrainian territory. She said Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is "still trying to stall and hoping it will go without consequences."
He left Anchorage without making any commitment to stop the killing," the official added.
Kallas is convinced that it is the US that has enough leverage to force the Kremlin to start real negotiations to end the war.
The European Union will work together with Ukraine and the United States to prevent Russian aggression from winning and to ensure the sustainability of any peace agreement," the EU diplomatic chief said.
In her opinion, the war will not stop until Russia "realises that it is no longer possible to continue it".
Therefore, Europe will continue to strengthen its support for Ukraine, including through the preparation of a new, 19th package of sanctions against Moscow, the European official assured.
Separately, Kallas noted that European security issues cannot be a bargaining chip.
The root of the war lies in Russia's imperialist policy, not in the alleged imbalance of the European security architecture," she concluded.
