Cage is back in fashion: the main print of autumn 2025

Forget summer stripes - autumn 2025 officially belongs to the cage.
Back in February, fashion shows predicted its triumph, and today the trend is confirmed by both the new Spring-Summer 2026 collections and street style looks from the streets of New York, Paris and Milan. One thing is clear: chequered print is not going to go into the shadows - on the contrary, it is becoming more and more universal and fashionable, writes Elle.
Many people still associate plaid with the uniforms of schoolgirls or flannel shirts of lumberjacks. But this season, designers are offering plenty of fresh ways to interpret it, from bright colours and mix prints for maximalists to minimalist monochrome looks. Those who tied a silk scarf around their waist this summer will love the autumn analogue - a checked shirt tied around the waist.
Where have we seen this?
Burberry (London),
Cos (New York),
Bally (Milan),
Isabel Marant (Paris) -
proved there's a cage for every city and style. Vivienne Westwood's '90s inspiration can be felt here, too.
Bonus: the trend is already available in shops and fits any budget. And while the temperatures are dropping, you still have time to find your perfect plaid.
Tops
Sure, you could just buy a shirt and call it a day. But a plaid deserves more than that! Wear it as a jacket thrown over your shoulders to add relaxed chic, or tie it around your waist for a voluminous and layered look.

Dresses
A plaid dress is not only spectacular, but also comfortable. Combine it with a leather bomber, belted flannel or high boots and you've got the perfect look for autumn.

Skirts
The best choices are midi or knee-length. To avoid associations with a librarian (although this is also a style!), choose draped silhouettes. And if you want to enhance the effect, add stylish glasses with frames.

Trousers
Checkered trousers don't have to be pyjamas. Want a '90s skater-inspired look? Easy. But for a more elegant look, pair them with heels and a leather belt for a fresh and daring look.
Handbags
If you're not ready for a full bow, start with accessories. A plaid leather, wool or canvas bag is an easy way to incorporate the trend into your everyday wardrobe. It will go with both a coat and a tweed suit.
Why it's worth trying
Cage is one of those prints that never goes out of fashion, but looks new every season. Now it's a symbol of freedom to mix styles, experiment with lengths, combine classics with street fashion.
And most importantly, it is practical: chequered things are easy to combine, and they are suitable both for the office and for the weekend
