The main reason for the importance of the Ukrainian language is its role as the state language.

This is stated in the KMIS survey.

Thus, based on the survey data, in December 2022 the majority of Ukrainians (58%) do not consider the Russian language important. At the same time, only 1% of respondents consider the Ukrainian language unimportant.

The main reason for the importance of Ukrainian language is its role as the state language (76%), followed by roles of "the basis of Ukraine's independence" (32%) and "the language that unites the Ukrainian society" (23%).

At home 50% of respondents communicate with their families only in Ukrainian, 12% - mostly in Ukrainian, 19% - equally in both languages, 16% - only or mostly in Russian, 2% - in other languages.

Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted its own survey on December 4-27, 2022 among 2005 respondents. At the request of Volodymyr Kulik (as part of a grant from the Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studios), questions regarding language and identity were added. The survey was not conducted in the Russian-occupied Crimea and Donbas or with citizens who left the country after February 24, 2022.
