Mariupol defender Oleksandr Ishchenko, who was tried by the Russians under a far-fetched article, has died on the territory of the Russian Federation.

This was reported by the Ukrainian parliamentary commissioner for human rights, Dmytro Lubinets, citing the serviceman's daughter.

According to the defender's daughter, Oleksandr Ishchenko died nine days ago. Earlier, the occupants held the 55-year-old man in a detention centre on the territory of the Russian Federation.

The Ukrainian side, according to the ombudsman, has not been officially notified. Also there was no report on the cause of death of a citizen of Ukraine.

Therefore, I immediately wrote to the Commissioner for Human Rights in the Russian Federation so that she could look into the tragic death of a prisoner of war, who was held by the Russian side, and inform me of the circumstances and cause of death of Oleksandr Ishchenko," Lubinets said.

The commissioner additionally informed the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN about the tragedy.

Ukraine demands that the Russian Federation steadfastly adhere to the Geneva Conventions - to provide the necessary medical assistance, to create a mixed medical commission, so that it would allow the repatriation of all the seriously ill and seriously wounded," the report said.

Now the Coordination headquarters for the treatment of prisoners of war clarifies the circumstances of the death of the defender. About it the head of the press service of the Coordstab Petro Yatsenko said in comments hromadske.

According to him, the Coordstab "has certain information", but data collection continues. A forensic medical examination will also be conducted. If the cause of the prisoner's death is not health-related, "it will be another proof for the International Criminal Court".
