- A new protest against the 30-hryvnia fare has been announced in Kyiv

On 11 August at 2.00 pm in Kyiv, a further protest against the increase in public transport fares to 30 hryvnias will take place outside the Kyiv City State Administration building.
The organisers from the civil society organisation ‘Social Movement’ announced the protest. According to them, during the rally, participants will demand that the capital’s authorities immediately consider the appeal from the Public Council under the Kyiv City State Administration dated 16 July 2026, which calls for the suspension of the decision to increase fares.
The organisers state that the increase in fares is exacerbating social tensions and is having a particularly severe impact on the capital’s residents in the context of the war. They are calling on the people of Kyiv to join the peaceful protest in defence of affordable public transport.
This new protest will be the latest in a series of demonstrations that have been taking place in the capital since mid-July. In particular, on 31 July, an information picket took place near the ‘Levoberezhna’ metro station, during which activists handed out leaflets calling on people to join the protest movement. According to the organisers, despite attempts by metro staff to move the venue of the protest, the picket went ahead at the planned location. During an air-raid alert, a large number of people gathered near the station to listen to speeches by the participants.
The first large-scale protests against the new fares took place on 14 July outside the Kyiv City State Administration building. At that time, participants demanded that the decision to increase fares be revoked and that an open dialogue be held with the city authorities. After no city representatives came out to meet the protesters, some of the participants entered the administration building. Later, the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko, promised to meet with representatives of the protesters during public hearings.
On 16 July, public hearings on the new fares were held at the Kyiv City State Administration. Following these hearings, the Public Council attached to the Kyiv City State Administration supported an appeal to the mayor demanding that the order to increase fares be revoked, that the previous fare of 8 hryvnias be reinstated, and that a new public consultation be held in accordance with the prescribed procedures.
Another protest took place on 19 July outside the Kyiv City State Administration. The participants stated that the new fares were not in line with the actual income levels of most Kyiv residents, and called on the city authorities to fulfil their social commitments and review the decision to increase fares.
It should be noted that, as of 15 July 2026, the cost of a single journey on Kyiv’s public transport system rose from 8 to 30 hryvnias. The Kyiv City State Administration attributes this to increased costs for electricity, fuel, rolling stock maintenance and labour. At the same time, opponents of the increase consider the new fares to be socially unjustified and are demanding that they be reviewed.
