18 North Korean servicemen escaped from Russian positions in Kursk region

According to intelligence reports, 18 North Korean soldiers escaped from positions on the Russian border near the Bryansk and Kursk regions, just 7 kilometres from the state border with Ukraine.
The Russian military has launched a search for the fugitives, but the reasons for the escape remain unknown. The intelligence source added that Russian troops are trying to hide the incident from the high command.
At the same time, according to information as of 15 October, a so-called "special Buryat battalion" is being formed at the base of the Russian army's 11th Independent Guards Assault Brigade, to which soldiers from North Korea are being recruited. It is reported that the battalion could be as large as 3,000 men and is being equipped with small arms and ammunition. The battalion is likely to be used in combat operations near Suja and Kursk in Russia.
Previous events include the signing of a "comprehensive strategic partnership" treaty between Russia and North Korea, which was submitted by President Vladimir Putin to the Russian State Duma for consideration. The document, signed on 19 June 2024, envisages mutual military support in the event of an armed attack on either country. The Centre for Countering Disinformation in Ukraine said that this treaty actually creates a military alliance between the countries, as it provides for comprehensive assistance in case of a threat to either side.
