The Verkhovna Rada must vote for this bill on June 20

Volodymyr Zelenskyy introduced a bill on the ratification of the Istanbul Convention. This is reported by "Ukrainian Truth". Information about the document is published on the website of the Parliament.

Deputies of the Verkhovna Rada can consider this document on June 20.

The document has already been signed by 46 countries and the European Union. However, 11 more of them, including Ukraine, have not ratified this agreement. The Istanbul Convention was signed by Ukraine back in 2011, but has not yet been ratified due to protests from churches and conservative politicians against the term "gender" used in it.

The Convention should help countries combat domestic and gender-based violence. First of all, we are talking about the protection of girls and women. This is the first such document that legally obliges to create a legal framework to combat violence against women. Countries that have joined the convention should criminalize psychological abuse, stalking, physical and sexual abuse, forced marriage, forced abortion and sterilization.
