Zelensky explained what guarantees Ukraine needs

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that there is still no clear understanding of what security guarantees will be provided by Europe and the USA to deter Russia from repeated aggression. He said this at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Sky News reported.

In particular, he was asked what security guarantees are acceptable for Ukraine: the deployment of European military on Ukrainian territory is still under consideration and whether Kiev is ready to agree to Article 5-style security guarantees, but without NATO membership.

Security guarantees are a strong army. Only Ukraine can give that. Funding for this army can be provided, as I think, only by Europe. Weapons for this army can be given by our domestic production, European production. But there are scarce things that only the United States has. I consider these as security guarantees," Zelensky said.

He noted that questions about the possible deployment of the European military in Ukraine and about giving the country the same protection in the sky as other states remain open for now. According to him, Ukraine seeks to get answers to these questions in order to clearly understand the essence of the proposed security guarantees.

Zelenskyy added that Ukraine considers joining the EU as part of security guarantees.
