KyivPride approves Zelensky's response to petition to legalize same-sex marriage
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has responded to an electronic petition regarding the legalization of same-sex marriage in the country.
In response to a petition to legalize same-sex marriage, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy noted that the government had worked out a solution to legalize registered civil partnerships in Ukraine.
Such a response to the petition is considered a positive signal in the LGBT community because a registered civil partnership means a legally recognized agreement that provides most of the rights of marriage besides the status itself. This is stated on Twitter KyivPride.
Earlier, the head of the Kherson queer organization Insha, Marina Usmanova, noted that the popularity of the petition indicates a change in the discourse in public opinion and that the LGBT community has mobilized.
But to introduce same-sex marriage in Ukraine, it is necessary to amend the constitution. It is impossible to make changes to the Constitution in wartime. Our body says marriage is a union between a man and a woman, which should be changed. But now, this cannot be done,” the activist noted.
But in general, according to her, expanding freedoms, including marriage, is a good trend.
