In Finland, they intend to place a NATO base near the border with Russia

Finland and Sweden announced their desire to join NATO after the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Finnish city of Lappeenranta in the province of South Karelia near the border with Russia offers its airport to host a NATO base. this was stated by the mayor of the settlement Kimmo Järva, Yle reports.
It is definitely available if the armed forces want it,” the head of the city said, noting that, not being an expert in this area, he cannot judge where to place the military.
He added that the prospect of Finnish membership in NATO gives South Karelia a sense of security. He also expressed hope that after that, business under such a scenario would be more willing to work in the territory of the border province.
According to the mayor, discussions about creating a NATO base in the city began at the same time that Finland started talking about joining the Alliance.
Earlier, Finland and Sweden jointly applied for NATO membership. On July 2, US President Joe Biden sent letters to Congress on the admission of these countries to the Alliance.
Recall that on June 29, NATO leadership decided to invite Sweden and Finland to the alliance.
