The campaign in northeastern Ukraine will eventually come to an end, allowing Russian troops to rebuild a stable defensive line and perhaps even launch local counterattacks.
This is reported by experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Experts say that a lengthy discussion and then announcement by Kyiv of a counter-offensive operation aimed at the Kherson region distracted Russian troops from sectors where Ukrainian forces have carried out decisive attacks in the past few days.
The current counteroffensive will not end the war, ISW experts say. The northeastern Ukraine campaign will eventually end, allowing Russian troops to rebuild a stable defensive line and perhaps even launch local counterattacks.
Ukraine will have to start new counter-offensive operations to complete the liberation of the territory occupied by Russia; in this regard, the war will likely drag on until 2023.
