Photographer Frankie Lucena took a photo of a rare natural phenomenon known as "giant jets" of inverted lightning.

Giant jets 50 times more powerful than ordinary lightning and can reach the boundaries of space, were seen on 20 August during Hurricane Franklin near Puerto Rico. This is reported by Space.

Puerto Rico photographer Frankie Lucena was taking pictures of Hurricane Franklin when a rare natural phenomenon flashed before his eyes: several huge lightning bolts shot upwards.

This kind of upward lightning is known as "giant jets." They are the rarest and most powerful type of lightning, occurring only 1,000 times a year and having a power more than 50 times that of ordinary lightning.

Upside-down lightning can rise more than 80 kilometres above the Earth's surface, touching the bottom of the ionosphere, a huge layer of electrically charged particles where the top of the Earth's atmosphere meets the bottom of outer space.
