A petition to introduce sex education has garnered 25,000 votes
A petition to introduce compulsory sex education into Ukraine's education system has collected the required number of signatures and must now be considered by the Ukrainian president.
Petition No. 22/179600-ep registered on the Official Internet Representative Office of the President of Ukraine has received the 25,000 votes required for consideration.
The initiators of the petition, the Women's Political Action public alliance and the expert resource Gender in Detail, call on the President to support the development of sexuality education programmes for children and young people that will meet international best practices and introduce them into the Ukrainian education system as soon as possible.
With the huge amount of information sources and limitless possibilities of the Internet, children on their own have access to videos that are often distorted and propagate violence. Due to their lack of skills in analysing information, children take everything at face value and do not understand what responsibility they may bear for their activities and inaction," the petition noted.
In particular, pupils and students should know about the physiological and psychological changes associated with puberty, contraception methods, unplanned pregnancy, personal safety, know the law and understand the basic principles of a culture of consent.
According to the authors, sex education for children and young people significantly reduces the risks of violence, crime, teenage pregnancies and also increases the age of first intercourse.
