North Korea is stepping up its military involvement on Russia's side in the war against Ukraine.

The New York Times reports, citing a senior US Defence Department official, that North Korea plans to send a new group of soldiers in the next two months.

Peculiarities of North Korean soldiers' tactics

Based on the testimonies of the Ukrainian military, American analysts and intelligence data, the following features of the North Koreans' actions stand out:

  • Offensive without equipment support: North Korean soldiers attack without armoured support, often advancing through minefields and under dense fire.
  • Discipline and Resilience: They continue the offensive despite losses without regrouping or retreating.
  • Strike Brigade Tactics: Soldiers attack chaotically but with an emphasis on strict discipline, ignoring the possibility of death.
  • Minimal interaction with Russian forces: Operate as a separate force with its own missions, distinguished by language, training and military culture.

According to South Korea's National Intelligence Service, 300 North Korean soldiers have already been killed and 2,700 wounded. Despite their lack of combat experience prior to this conflict, North Korean units are adapting and acquiring the skills of modern warfare.

The Ukrainian military, however, emphasises that the North Koreans should not be underestimated. They become more dangerous with each new combat experience. According to experts, North Korea's actions may be part of a strategy to improve the combat capability of its troops. Despite the high losses, the DPRK leadership may consider them as a "necessary payment" for training troops in real combat conditions.
