NATO assesses the likelihood of a US withdrawal from the Alliance

Donald Trump has told European officials as US president that the states will withdraw from NATO and that Europe should not rely on aid in the event of war.
NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joanet believes that the statements of US presidential candidate Donald Trump about the probable withdrawal of the United States from the North Atlantic Alliance are not dictated by the real situation. According to him, the US needs allies now more than ever. He said this the day before in an interview with the Romanian TV channel Digi24.
Joane explained, every country has "its own democratic game", so we need to "have respect and patience to see what the American people will decide."
We have already worked with Trump and therefore have full confidence that for America, NATO is the place where they have the most allies in one organisation," he said.
At the same time, Joane pointed out that the alliances of China and Russia are growing in importance in the world, and the positions of Iran and North Korea are strengthening, which means that global alliances remain meaningful for the United States.
Joane also expressed confidence that after the pre-election period the situation "will develop in the order of constructive logic", hinting that if Trump wins the US election, his actions will not be in line with previous rhetoric.
We will remind, earlier Trump said that the US will withdraw from NATO in case of his victory in the elections.
