The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NAPC) has added the Chinese group of companies Alibaba Group Holding Limited to the list of international sponsors of the war because of the fact that it continues to operate in the Russian Federation.

In particular, Alibaba Group provides its platforms for selling goods made of copper exported from the occupied territories of Ukraine. This is reported by the press service of the NAPC.

In 2023, the company announced a restructuring plan, providing for the division of Alibaba Group into 6 groups: Cloud Intelligence Group, Taobao Tmall Business Group (Taobao, Tmall, Taobao Deals, Taocaica\i, 1688.com), Local Services Group (Amap, Ele.me), Global Digital Business Group (Lazada, AliExpress, Trendyol, Daraz, Alibaba.com), Cainiao Smart Logistics, Digital Media and Entertainment Group (Youku, Alibaba Pictures).

In the Russian Federation, the most widely used online commerce platform is AliExpress, which is operated by Alibaba.COM (RU) LLC, a Russian subsidiary of Alibaba Group.

Alibaba.COM (RU) LLC is owned by Aliexpress Russia Holding Private Ltd, a company registered in Singapore. As of 2023, the company continues to do business in Russia, providing an international platform for the sale of foreign goods.

The NAPC specified that in April 2023, Reuters reported that the Chinese company Quzhou Nova purchased at least 3,220 tonnes of copper alloy worth $7.4 million from Debaltsevo Metallurgical Engineering Plant (controlled by Russians) between 8 October 2022 and 24 March 2023.

According to customs data, shipments of copper alloy from the plant were made through the port of Novorossiysk. From the copper exported from the occupied territories, the company produces goods, which it sells on Alibaba platforms.

All these facts may indicate that the company supports the Russian aggression not only financially, paying taxes, but also ideologically, - stated in the message NAPC.

The NAPC stressed that Alibaba also resorts to censorship of Ukrainian content on its platforms related to the Russian war. In March 2022, Alibaba blocked the profile of a Ukrainian streamer, who had more than 268 thousand subscribers on AliExpress, for messages about the war. At the same time, pro-Russian messages on the platform are not deleted.
