The Moldovan government will sack some Russian diplomats in the wake of the politicians' wiretapping scandal.

Ukrinform reports.

The number of diplomats at the Russian embassy in Chisinau will be significantly reduced. According to Moldovan Foreign and European Integration Minister Nic Popescu, this is due to the threat of Russian representatives destabilising the country.

In our opinion, it is very important that the diplomatic services, not only of our country, but also of other states, are aimed at developing good relations, and not at destabilising our countries. We have agreed with institutions and political decision-makers on the need to limit the number of Russian diplomats accredited in Moldova. This is done in order to have fewer persons involved in destabilising Moldova," Popescu said.

The relevant decision was taken after a journalistic investigation. The media noticed that antennas were installed on the roof of the Russian embassy which could be used to listen to Moldovan politicians.

The Russian ambassador to Moldova was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to clarify the details. However, Oleg Vasnetsov said that the antennas had been installed long ago and were partially rusted. He also believes that this is "just an excuse for the long-standing decision to cut the diplomatic staff", undermining "the possibilities of dialogue between the two countries".
