Lace, wings and black corsets: photo report from WGT 2026

In Leipzig, what has long been perceived here not as a festival but as a seasonal transformation of the city has happened again.
the 33rd Wave-Gotik-Treffen took place from 22 to 25 May 2026, and for a few days Leipzig became the capital of the "dark scene" - from gothic rock and darkwave to industrial, steampunk, neofolk and Victorian aesthetics.

The official WGT programme was spread across the city's venues: agra, Felsenkeller, Täubchenthal, Moritzbastei, Peterskirche, Heidnisches Dorf and other locations.
But the WGT vibe isn't just about concerts. Photos from the park show that daytime Leipzig lives as an open stage: people sit on the grass, pose under the trees, talk, drink coffee, wait for evening performances and quietly turn a picnic into a performance.

Black corsets, lace, boots, cylinders, military uniforms, white wigs, masks, wings, Victorian parasols and steampunk glasses do not look like a costume show for tourists. Rather, it is a form of communication: each image speaks for its owner before he utters a word.
WGT's contrast is particularly strong in the shots: not a gloomy cellar, but bright sunshine, green grass and pink rhododendrons. Against this background, the black silhouettes look even more expressive. Angel wings - black and white, a heavy gothic skirt next to an almost theatrical military red uniform, an artist who sketches the participants right in the park - all this creates the feeling not of a festival crowd, but of a temporary city within a city.

One of the most recognisable daytime rituals of the WGT is the Victorian Picnic at Clara-Zetkin-Park. The city of Leipzig describes it as the unofficial kick-off to the festival: participants come there in looks ranging from Victorian romance to steampunk and cyber-gothic, and admission is free. It is this format that is well read in the photo: people are not in a hurry, do not compete for attention, but exist in a common visual environment. The camera almost never intrudes here - it captures a scene that has already been prepared.

The musical part of WGT 2026 was also large-scale: according to dpa/Welt, up to 20,000 guests from different countries and more than 200 artists were expected. Notable names included Einstürzende Neubauten and Kim Wilde, and the programme covered Gothic Rock, Electro, Dark Wave, Mittelalter Rock and Industrial. The official schedule for agra, for example, announced Kim Wilde, Einstürzende Neubauten, Anja Huwe / XMal Deutschland, Covenant, Frontline Assembly, Lacrimosa, London After Midnight, Molchat Doma and others.
