Italy asks Europe to help the country cope with the influx of migrants

About 8,000 migrants arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa in less than two days.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called on European countries to provide assistance to curb the flow of migrants into the country. This is reported by Bloomberg.
She pointed out that on the tiny island between Tunisia and Sicily, where thousands of migrants continue to arrive, a humanitarian disaster is unfolding and invited the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen to come and see what is happening on Lampedusa.
The Prime Minister also urged the head of the European Council Charles Michel to put the issue on the agenda of the EU Council in October and to do everything possible to stop the flow of migrants.
The day before, the authorities of the island of Lampedusa declared a state of emergency: more than 8 thousand illegal immigrants landed there in three days.
The Mediterranean island is the first point of arrival for people from Asia and Africa seeking asylum in European countries. Lampedusa's population barely exceeds six thousand, and in the last few days alone, about 8 thousand new migrants have arrived on the island. More often the illegals come by boat from Libya and Tunisia.
Meanwhile, the situation on the island of Lampedusa is worsening: according to the media, hundreds of migrants are trying to break through the fences and leave the port. There are also problems with the supply of food and drinking water to the refugees.
According to the Italian Interior Ministry, this year more than 120 thousand migrants arrived in Italy by sea, among them more than 11 thousand minors unaccompanied by adults.
