Before the war, 1.42 million people lived in Kharkiv.

There are 1 million 200 residents and IDPs in Kharkiv. This was reported by the mayor Igor Terekhov on the air of the telethon on Friday, 13 September.

He also noted that the number of population in the city fluctuates and waves of both return of residents and their outflow are fixed. More often people leave after intensive shelling.

When there are frequent explosions, when heavy shelling, some people do move to other cities near Kharkiv, then they come back. But this is a small number of people," Terekhov pointed out.

Also, the authorities of the regional centre do not exclude that a number of Kharkiv citizens will decide to winter in another part of the country or abroad.

Note, after the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation, a significant part of the inhabitants left the city. In March 2022, about 400 thousand people remained in Kharkiv, and it was the point of minimum. Subsequently, Kharkiv residents began to gradually return.

According to the representatives of the city authorities, there were four waves of return of Kharkiv citizens.

The first wave. It was in the spring of 2022, when the AFU liberated settlements in the north of the region, from which residential areas of Kharkiv were shelled. at that time 2 thousand people returned to Kharkiv every day.

The second wave. It took place after September-October 2022. As a result of the Kharkiv counter-offensive almost all the previously occupied territory of Kharkiv region was liberated. Shelling of the city from artillery stopped. Kharkiv citizens returned even to the most "dangerous" districts, for example, to Northern Saltovka. The population of the city grew to 1.1 million people.

The third wave. It took place around the New Year.

Fourth wave. It took place in the late summer of 2023. The city authorities associated it with the onset of the new school year.

Kharkiv mayor Igor Terekhov believes that after the war the population of the city will grow to 2.5 million.

We would like to add that Kharkiv Region is now home to about 2.4m people.
