Finland will build a high fence on the border with Russia

One of the main reasons for the construction of the wall is the war in Ukraine. Another reason for strengthening the fence is Finland's desire to join NATO. The country is aiming to join the military alliance in May, formally starting the process of joining this week.

To do this, Finland adopted amendments to the Border Guard Law, which contribute to the construction of stronger walls on the country's 1,300-kilometer eastern border with Russia.

The purpose of the law is to improve the operational ability of the border guard to respond to hybrid threats. The war in Ukraine has contributed to the urgency of this issue, said Ann Ihanus, a senior adviser at the Interior Ministry.

In all likelihood, the fence will not cover the entire eastern border, but will be aimed at places that are considered the most important.
