The Council of the European Union has approved the decision to extend the temporary protection regime for Ukrainian citizens who left the country because of the war until 4 March 2027. This was reported bySuspilne.

The EU recalled that the extension of protection is carried out on the basis of a special directive that allows to leave in force temporary measures in case of impossibility of safe return to the country due to the ongoing conflict or the risk of mass violations of human rights.

The EU Council stressed that Russia's full-scale aggression was continuing and the security situation in Ukraine remained critical.

According to the EU data, as of 2025, more than 4.3 million Ukrainians enjoy temporary protection in the EU countries. The extension of the status will allow them to continue to stay legally on the territory of the EU countries, work, receive education and basic social services without having to undergo the asylum procedure.

In addition, the EU member states will continue to coordinate actions and exchange information to avoid duplication of registration in different states.

Earlier in June, the European Commission took the initiative to extend the Temporary Protection Directive until March 2027. It was introduced in March 2022, shortly after Russia's invasion began, and became the legal basis for emergency reception of displaced people from Ukraine.

As Socialportal wrote, more than 4 million Ukrainians currently have temporary protection status in the EU. Most have managed to obtain legal status, basic support, access to medical care, education and the labour market. However, life in a foreign land is accompanied by many challenges, and a significant proportion of people still live "between two worlds". What can the state do to bring back its citizens and how they help the country those who have become part of the Ukrainian diaspora abroad.
