The European Union will provide assistance for potential radiation exposure in the event of an accident at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant.

The EU plans to transfer 5.5 million tablets of potassium iodide worth over 500 thousand euros to Ukraine as a preventive security measure. This was reported by the press service of the European Commission.

Ukraine has made a request to the EU for the provision of medications.

The tablets will be used in limited cases to avoid absorption of inhaled or ingested radioactive iodine by the thyroid gland, the European Commission said.

In which case, the pills should increase the security of residents near the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant temporarily occupied by Russian troops.

No nuclear power plant should ever be used as a theater of war. It is unacceptable that the lives of civilians be endangered. All hostilities around the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant must be stopped immediately,” added Janez Lenarczych, European Commissioner for Crisis Management.
