Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern over the US decision to cut military aid.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said that he was not aware in advance of the United States' decision to reduce its support for Kiev. According to him, this came as a surprise and he expects to personally discuss this issue with US President Donald Trump during the G7 summit to be held in Canada. This the head of the Ukrainian state said in an interview with the American TV channel Newsmax.

Nobody informed me in advance. So far I want to believe that these are only signals, and not the final decision. I hope that President Trump will not confirm these words with actions. I want to raise this issue in a personal conversation during the summit. Such statements are very painful for us," he said.

What happened

Earlier, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told Congress about the Trump administration's plans to reduce the amount of military aid to Ukraine in the defence budget for 2026. According to him, the new strategy involves an emphasis on diplomatic steps rather than protracted military support. In addition, the US is insisting that NATO countries take a greater share of responsibility for Europe's security and containing Russia.

On the upcoming G7 summit

The G7 leaders' summit will be held in June 2025 in Kananaskis, Alberta, Canada. It will be the first such meeting after the return of Donald Trump to the White House, as well as the debut summit for the new head of the Canadian government Mark Carney. The President of Ukraine will also attend the meeting.

Among the main topics:

  • the future of support for Ukraine amid the ongoing war,

  • the sustainability of the global economy,

  • development of digital technologies and their regulation,

  • climate challenges and energy security.

Canada, which holds the G7 presidency this year, has outlined its goal of encouraging leaders to act together to address global challenges.
