You will have to pay the entrance fee next year.

From January 16, 2023, tourists will pay for entry to Venice, Italy. It is assumed that it will be possible to visit the city for 3 or 10 euros, depending on the season. This was announced on Friday by the city council of Venice, according to CNN.

This practice of paid entrance to the territory of the policy will be the first in the world.

Authorized inspectors will also appear in the city with the right to stop tourists and require them to confirm payment for entry. In case of violation, visitors to Venice face a fine.

The collected funds will be used to reduce the cost of garbage collection in Venice - the price of this utility service in the city is higher than in other places in Italy.

At the same time, tourists arriving in Venice for one night, residents of the city, as well as their guests will be able not to pay for the entrance - for this they will have to download a certificate from a special platform (which will be ready by the end of 2022).

The aim of the initiative is to discourage one-day tourism at certain times of the year and to encourage multi-day tourism in accordance with the elegance and uniqueness of the city, the Venice City Council said.

According to preliminary calculations by the city authorities, the new entrance tax should bring up to 50 million euros to the city treasury annually.

Every year, Venice is visited by about 25-28 million tourists from all over the world, who leave at least 2.5 billion euros in the city.

The municipality of Venice proposed the introduction of a paid entrance in 2019 due to the large number of tourists. However, the coronavirus pandemic put the initiative on hold.

Venice is an amazingly beautiful city, which, however, is overcrowded with tourists, and everything here is very expensive. At its peak in the 15th century, the city was a vast Mediterranean empire. Later, when the political power was left behind, Venice turned into the most important tourist site.
