Thus, the Turkish president commented on the aggravation of the situation between Lebanon and Israel after the Lebanese strike on the Golan Heights

"We have to be strong so that Israel cannot do these terrible things to Palestine. Just like we went into Karabakh, just like we went into Libya - we could do the same thing to them," Erdogan said, according to Reuters.

Israeli Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz said Erdogan was "following in the footsteps of Saddam Hussein" by threatening to attack Israel.

He also called on NATO to expel Turkey from the North Atlantic Alliance after Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that he might send troops into the Jewish state. This was reported by The Times of Israel on 29 July.

On Saturday, 27 July, a rocket attack on a football field in the village of Majdal Shams in the Golan Heights in Israel killed 12 children. The Israel Defence Forces said the strike was carried out by an Iranian missile and that Lebanon's Hizbullah was behind the shelling. The group denied involvement in the shelling, but shortly before the strike, Hizbullah reported shelling a military base near Majdal Shams. The White House also blamed Hizbullah for the strike on the Golan Heights.
