The US criticized the UN for failing to stop Russia's war against Ukraine

US Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau has criticised the UN and the Security Council for their failure to stop the war launched by Russia against Ukraine.
He said this at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council, Ukrinform reported, UNIAN reported.
The main reason for the creation of the UN after the Second World War was to prevent future wars, but the organisation got bogged down in secondary issues and does not fulfil its main mission. The UN's failure to stop the war in Ukraine is an example of this failure," Landau said.
He also called on Security Council members to promote peace talks.
Will your statements really help the peaceful resolution of the conflict? Are you trying to find something to encourage the parties to lay down their arms? Are your statements helping the parties to come to the negotiating table - or, on the contrary, are they discouraging them? - he addressed the members of the Security Council.
The role of the US and the UN
Landau said Washington hopes the US presidency of the Security Council this month will help the organisation move from statements to actual steps to achieve peace.
The Trump administration remains committed to working with both Russia and Ukraine to end this war. And we reiterate our call on both sides to negotiate in good faith - in the spirit of flexibility, compromise, and the responsibility to protect the lives of their citizens," he stressed.
The UN, according to the Secretary of State, has an important role to play in achieving peace in Ukraine, "so that people will not look back and say that the UN has become irrelevant and peace was achieved in spite of the UN, not because of it."
Trump and the peace process
At the same time, Landau noted US President Donald Trump's role in the peace process.
From the day he returned to office, President Trump has made it clear that he is determined to end the war in Ukraine... It is critical to end the senseless death and destruction," he said.
The deputy secretary of state stated that the war has serious consequences not only for the parties to the conflict, but also for the entire international order.
It has thrown the entire international political, economic and military order out of balance. It has imposed enormous costs, first of all on the parties to the conflict, but also on many other countries," Landau said.
He also stressed that the U.S. continues to work on an agreement to end the war, and negotiations continued over the weekend.
We are trying to show both sides that they will benefit more from ending the war than from continuing to fight. Peace will usher in prosperity that this region has never seen before," the U.S. official said.
