The creation of the army should make the EU ready for "peacekeeping, monitoring and deterrence", as well as uniting efforts quickly and clearly.
The European Union should form its own armed forces that could play a role in maintaining peace and preventing conflicts, Italian Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani said, La Stampa reported.
If we want to be peacekeepers in the world, we need European armed forces. And this is a fundamental condition to be able to conduct an effective European foreign policy," he said.
According to the foreign minister, in a world with powerful players such as the US, China, India, Russia, with crises from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific, European citizens can only be protected by the EU.
Tajani also added that the 27-nation EU should streamline its leadership and have a single president instead of the current structure consisting of the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission.
The EU has repeatedly spoken out about the possibility of creating a united army. Thus, the head of the European diplomacy Josep Borrel in 2021 was in favour of creating a rapid reaction force on the territory of the European Union.
It should be added that the largest armies in the EU can boast Germany, France and Italy. The number of servicemen in each of them reaches 200 thousand people. Poland and Spain are next.
