US satellites pick up explosion at Kakhovka hydropower plant before it collapses - NYT

US satellites using infrared sensors have detected a heat signal characteristic of a massive explosion at the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant before it was destroyed. This was reported by The New York Times, citing a senior official of the US President Joe Biden's administration.
He stressed that intelligence analysts are convinced that Russia was behind the explosion. According to them, the reason for the destruction of the HPP, which is controlled by the Russian Federation, was a deliberate explosion on the territory of the plant itself. However, the source stressed, before saying this for sure, a thorough investigation should be conducted and conclusive evidence should be obtained.
The US has not ruled out that damage to the dam earlier and rising water levels could have contributed to the rapid collapse of the dam, but the final cause of the disaster was an explosion.
The International Intelligence Community InformNapalm stressed that the Russian Federation was spreading false information that the dam itself had collapsed. They also noted that the consequences of what happened were catastrophic.
