The heart can repair itself after a heart attack. However, damaged or dead cells should also disappear.

This is reported by scientists from Northwestern University, Illinois, reports ScienceAlert.

According to them, macrophages play the main role in the process of heart recovery. These are cells that destroy foreign particles in the body, as well as dead tissue. Macrophages are the first to help recovery after a heart attack due to the fact that they produce a special type of protein - VEGFC.

Our research shows that these immune cells, called macrophages, travel to the heart after a heart attack and engulf damaged or dead tissue. And the VEGFC protein they make helps the heart resume its normal work faster, said Edward Thorpe of Northwestern University.
