The parade of planets in February. When to expect

about author Observers can see seven planets at once at the end of February - a phenomenon called the "parade of planets".
Although they are not arranged in a perfect straight line, all the bodies are visually grouped on the same side of the Sun. Such "gatherings" happen fairly regularly, but depend on the number of planets and their positions, Phys.org reported.
Which planets are visible?
- Venus, Mars and Jupiter: clearly visible to the naked eye, with Mars distinguishable by its characteristic reddish-orange colour.
- Mercury and Saturn: faintly visible near the horizon, so they are not easy to see.
- Uranus and Neptune: require binoculars or a telescope as they are too dim against the night sky.
How to observe?
- Choose clear weather: It is best to go out on a cloudless evening just after sunset.
- Distinguish planets from stars: Planets tend not to twinkle and appear brighter. Mars has a noticeable reddish hue.
- Help yourself with apps: Modern astronomy apps can tell you the exact location of each planet.
- Consider the outgoing panorama: Gradually, by spring, the planets will "disperse" across the sky.
Why it's interesting
- Observe without equipment: Even without a telescope, you can see at least three planets (Venus, Mars and Jupiter).
- Rare: According to NASA, such "parades" of four or five planets visible to the naked eye occur every few years.
- Difference from the last parade: There was also a parade of planets last June, but then only two of them could be seen without optics. Now another one has been added to the "freely visible" group - Mercury - although it won't be easy to observe.
Gradually, as the seasons change, the planetary "roundelay" in the sky will dissipate. So now is a great time to admire a rare picture and perhaps be inspired to get further acquainted with astronomy.
